Algarve: Safe Summer starts with mega operation
The programme “Safe Summer” is starting with on-the-ground operations all over the Algarve. The Civil Defence’s District Operational Coordination Centre (CCOD) has evaluated the resources for fighting fires.
The Faro Civil Governor, Isilda Gomes, told the Algarve Observer that the presentation of additional staff for the “Safe Summer” programme would be done through “on-the-ground operations”, but she did not disclose the date for this, which would be “communicated in due course”.
In terms of new facilities, there will be an additional 6 basic life support ambulances for the INEM – the National Medical Emergency Institute, to reinforce provision in the region.
The year, the PSP will be carrying out another initiative focusing on tourists, with the brochure “Portugal, Safer Place” to be distributed on arrival at the airport, at tourist offices, railway stations and taxis ranks, among others.
According to Isilda Gomes, the number of officers coming to the Algarve includes the PSP, the GNR and the Maritime Authority. Dog Units, Special Operations Groups and Tourist Assistance will also be present.
During the summer, the different security forces should be reinforced by over 600 officers.
Operation Safe Summer has been underway since 26th June, the PSP says on its site, and will last until 15th September.
Operação Charlie to prevent fires
Yesterday, the official start of Operation Charlie, which is intended to prevent fires during the critical period, there was a meeting of the District Operational Coordination Centre (CCOD) of the District Civil Defence Commission in São Bartolomeu de Messines.
The meeting was held to check that all the resources are in place, especially those for fire prevention, the Civil Governor of Faro, who chairs the body, explained to the Algarve Observer.
Special attention was given to watch towers, air resources, fire fighters and the maintenance of Fuel Management Strips.
